17 killed in torrential rains in Japan
NZPA-Reuter ■ Tokyo Floods and landslides triggered by torrential rains in Kyushu, south-west Japan, yesterday killed more than 17 people and injured 34 others, the police said. The rains also destroyed 46 houses, partially damaged 39 others and flooded more than 18,000, affecting about 20,000 people. The rains began lashing the Fukuoka, Nagasaki, Kumamoto, Saga and Oita prefectures (states) in Kyushu
on Thursday night. The rainfall had totalled more than 500 mm. The police said there were also 423 landslides, 223 roads cut, 14 bridges washed away and 145 breakwaters and dykes destroyed. Railway officials said heavy rains had also forced the cancellation of 750 trains by yesterday. The rains also crippled air services, most departures from Fukuoka being cancelled.
