Tracy Austin, the defending champion and top women’s seed, and the top men’s seed, Bjorn Borg, have advanced to the fourth round of the United States tennis open. Austin recovered from a 1-4 deficit in the opening set to beat Sylvia Hanika, of West Germany, 6-4, while Borg, bidding for his first open title, also got off to a slow start before eliminating Peter McNamara, of Australia, 7-6,1-6, 6-0. . ; / Four other men’s seeds and four seeded women also gained the fourth round at the United States National Tennis Centre before a crowd of 20,049, the fourth seed, Guillermo Vilas, of Argentina, had the closest call, as he edged. Francisco Gonzalez, of Puerto Rico, 3-6, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-2. The fourteenth seed, Wojtek Fibak, of Poland, and Yannick Noah of France, No. 15, both had to recover from, first-set losses to prevail. Fibak beat Van
Winitsky 3-6, 6-1, 7-6, while Noah eliminated Mel Purcell, 4-6, 6-2, 6=4, 6-4.
The eleventh seed, Roscoe Tanner, turned back Erick Van Dillen, 7-6, 6-1, 6-2. Chris Evert Lloyd, the third women’s- seed, routed Wendy White, 6-1, 6-1, and has now lost only six games in. six sets. Others to advance were the sixth seed, Dianne Fromholtz of Australia, the tenth seed, Virginia Ruzici, of Rumania, arid the thirteenth seed, Pam Shriver, Who was runner-up to Mrs Lloyd two years ago.
