Smithfield market
Because of continuing plentiful supplies of domestic lambs in the United Kingdom last week, retailer, interest in New Zealand lamb was subdued, reports the New Zealand Meat Producers’ Board in its weekly market survey.
Wholesale prices of New Zealand lamb eased on the previous week for the small quantity traded, particularly for the heavier grades which are in direct competition with domestic supplies at this time of year. On Smithfield market PL grade was quoted at 58.0-
59.0 p per lb, and PM grade at 51.0-52.0 p per lb. Except for . spot sales, trading in imported beef in the United States has been slow last week, the board reports. Price levels were similar to the previous week, with ’ New Zealand cow beef easing 0.5 c to 126 U.S. cents per lb, c.i.f. * The quiet tone is still ruling on the Japanese mutton market, although the sale of about 200 tonnes of MLI and MX grades was reported at up to 66.5 U.S. cents per lb, c. and f. Japan.
