Three women first home in road race
PA Timaru This year’s Pleasant Point to Temuka road race was run on Saturday in ideal conditions and attracted more than 180 runners from throughout the South Island.
The race, which is run on ‘handicap basis, saw the first three placings fall to women who led the field from start to finish.
The two back markers. M. Hurring and A. Moir, both of the Ariki'club, added much to the pace and interest of the race as they battled through the field to try for the fastest times. MEN Junior: M. Marychurch (Ariki) 1, D, Falvey (Timaru) 2. D. Gray (Gore) 3. Under 18: C. Woods (Timaru) 1, P. Bennison (Timaru) 2, B. Hill (Christchurch Old Boys) 3. Winning team: Timaru. Under 16: P. Baker (United) 1, R. Gray (Gore) 2. K. Fox (United) 3. Winning team: Gore. Under 14: C. Dowall (Leith) 1, R. Gordon (Timaru) 2, G. McNeilly (Timaru Presbyterian) 3. Winning team: Leith. Results were:— WOMEN Senior: G. Douglas (Leith) 1, A. Rigg (St Martins) 2.- J. Hocking (Christchurch) 3. Under 18: J. Holland (Ashburton) 1. R. Bennett (Leith) 2, T. Brown (Toe H) 3. Under 16: C. Balter (Christchurch) 1, S. Maxted (Toe H) 2, S. Clarkson (Timaru) 3.
Under 14: R. Browne (Christchurch) 1, R. Hocking (Christchurch) 2, T. McQueen (Dunedin Presbyterian) 3. Pleasant Point to Temuka 16 km road race: J. Holland (Ashburton) t, J. Forrester (St Martins) 2, P. Hogarth (Toe H) 3.
Fastest time went to M. Hurring (Ariki), 52.05, the fastest veteran was I. Falvey (Timaru), 56.58, and C. McArthur (Leith), 62.44, was the fastest woman in the race.
The team winner was Ariki.
