Rangiora top pony club
Rangiora has won the) South Island pony club; inter-branch teams’ com-1 petition for the Springston) Trophy. The three-day event finished at Geraldine yesterday with a score of 137.33, sufficient to give Rangiora (a .branch of the North Canterbury Pony Club) a fairly I comfortable win. over its nearest rival, Kaiapoi. ' The team of six, comprising • Anne Carlyon (Honeyglow), Katherine McDonald (Lileni Pandora), Prue Chapman (Redwood), Phillip Schluter (Hot Stuff), Katherine Crowe (F rosty Morn),- and Sarah Horne (Splashdown) finished 7.34 points clear of Kaiapoi )(144.67), followed by Central : Southland (151.99), Geraldine ;No. 1 (173.00), and Glencoe (211.67). f . ■
Rangiora completed the dressage phase in the healthy position of fourth place..,
At'the end of the cross-) country it • was'. the .only i :team to have five of, its six
members with clear rounds. This gave it a lead which was maintained throughout the show jumping.
The cross-country course, designed by Mr Rex Nelson, was well-built and solid with the fences generally giving rise to an equal number of stops. Unfortunately, though, the course demanded too much too soon; causing eliminations and many stops, particularly in the senior groups, as early as events two and three. This disappointed the competitors. The Springston Trophy was presented to the winning team by Mr and Mrs M. J. Foster, donors of this trophy in 1972. The “wooden.. spoon” for the winner of the teams eliminated after the crosscountry went to the Riccar-ton-Fendaiton branch. Rangiora’s win was a 'good omen for 198 I’s i Springston Trophy, for i which the host will be the • North Canterbury Pony Club, ’ • ■■■■ -5' -
