Important golf win for Stephen Street
Stephen. Street (Harewood) staked strong claims for a place in the Canterbury eight-man team for the South Island interprovincial tournament in ' early October with a one-stroke victory in the Rangiora-golf open on Saturday. . ' A Street represented Canterbury in the: Freyberg Rose Bowl, in 1977 . and 1978, but he was suspended for a period last year and that cost -him. his chance of retaining his place invthe top five. ' The young Harewood No. 2 has displayed maturity and determination in the many tournaments he has played this season and his- success was. well earned, v. Street was involved in an exciting finish to the 36-hole event — held in conjunction with the North, Canterbury stroke championship , with the 1978 champion, John Williamson.
I The two were playing In the s same foursome and it was a cut i and thrust contest over the final ■ holes. Street, with a 74 in the r morning, started the second - round one stroke ahead of Wili liamson, who was equal second last year. r Both were two-under par after i seven holes. Williamson was the ■ first to drop strokes and return • to par but Street followed suit > at the fourteenth and they were > even-pegging after 15 holes. A par by Street ht the six- ! teenth regained him a one-shot • lead and Williamson, who had - missed some reasonable putts, i made his biggest error at the . seventeenth when he missed a ■ birdie putt from less than one metre.. - '■ -;J : ! There was renewed hope for ’ Williamson at the last hole. His wedge approach stopped within
a metre of the hole, but Street proved equal to the occasion. His wedge shot hit the flag and they both had birdies.
John Allin, who won the even in 1969, was tied in third place with James Angus arid Dennis Beggs on 150. Allin put together two steady rounds; Beggs, after leading the field with 73 in the morning, slipped a little with 77 in the afternoon; and Angus, a former provincial stroke and match-play champion, made a pleasing showing after a back injury with a par round of 72 in the afternoon. Leading scorers were:— 147—S. W. Street, 74, 73. •<l4B—J. N. I Williamson; 75, 73.
