Easy win for North in island clash
The annual North-South match was a lacklustre game, with the North Island winning, 49-28. ■ The South team, composed entirely of the Canterbury team, except for Otago’s Shelley McMeekan dn goal defence, looked a spent force. It was hard to believe it was almost the same team which had produced such a sparkling display against Auckland.
This in nd way detracted from the North Island’s performance. The established combination of Willering and Lyn Parker , ' showed it had lost none of its magic. \ The New Zealand captain,
Parker, had had a poor tournament but returned her best in the North-South encounter. Playing intelligent netball, she used the feint pass to advantage to feed her shooters, Ruth Aitken and Te Aroha Clarke and outwit South’s defence. Margaret Patillo, making a strong bid for the centre position in the New Zealand side, was a tower of strength, picking up Willering’s' deflections with considerable style. • The South . appeared to have no positional plan and the North : had an o easy march to its'49-28 win. ■ Two of the “finds” of this
year’s championships were the young Te Aroha Clarke, of' Auckland, and the goal keeper, Tracy Fear, from King Country. Both girls had great games for the North as did the goal attack, Ruth Aitken. North’s 21-goal margin was the largest defeat inflicted on the South Island since 1961. The teams were:North Island-Te Aroha Clarke, Ruth Aitken. Lyn Parker, Margaret Patillo, Tilly Merioti, Yvonne Willering (captain), Tracy Fear. Reserves-Margaret Komana, Denise Felix, Sharon Wilson, ■ South Island-Ann Davidson, Adrianne Prattley (captain), Janice Henderson, Lyn McLennan, Leigh Mills, Shelley McMeekan, Sandra Heffemon. - -• Reserves-Lyn Proudlove, Wai Tauinaunu, Vicki Nalder. ‘ ■ ■ ■:<" - '
The North and South selectors were Mrs P. Briggs (North Shore) Mrs E. Rouse, (Canterbury) ( and Mrs A. Thurlow (Otago). . Before - the - inter-island game,. Mrs P? Harrison, of Hiitt. Valley, was presented with her, New Zealand umpires’ badge for her consistently high standard of umpiring. This badge has hot been presented for five years.
‘ Miss D. ,Jones, of Auckland, had her badge endorsed.
