Out in Touch
An attempt to screen the Canterbury regional news programme, “The Mainland Touch,” in Otago and Southland on Thursday evening was abandoned at the last minute when Dunedin television technical staff involved in an industrial dispute refused to co-oper-ate.
Including Otago and Southland weather forecasts and news items, the programme was beamed from Christchurch to Dunedin, but not put on screens in the lower half of the South Island. Dunedin and Southland viewers, whose own regional programme, “7.30 South,” was abandoned because essential staff were affected by an overtime ban, had half an hour of music by a Jamaican steel band. The television station in Dunedin has received only one letter about the change, from a man who said how much he preferred the steel band to the usual regional news programme. Frances Weston, who is usually one of the Dunedin regional news programme presenters, flew to Christchurch on Thursday to sit in with Rodney Bryant in the joint Christe h u r c h-Dunedin programme. News of the refusal in Dunedin to accept the programme from Christchurch reached “Mainland Touch” production staff too late for any alterations to be made and the programme was presented as if it were being received outside its usual area.
