More L.P.G. for South Island

NZPA Wellington Liquid petroleum gas supplies to the South Island are expected to improve by the end of the year, after a series of problems led to chronic shortages of the fuel in the last 12 months.

Last year the South Island received only about oneninth of the 9428 tonnes produced from Kapuni. Tit is was inadequate to meet the rapidly growing demand and widespread shortages resulted, particularly in South Island cities.

The annual report of the Ministry of Energy, tabled in Parliament yesterday, says the supply worsened after the withdrawal of some L.P.G. rail tankers for repair of defective welds. A lack of shipping space to South Island ports, and a drop in L.P.G. production in March exacerbated the problems.

But, the report says, supply should improve later in 1980 through the recycling of Kapuni gas and the expansion of production capacity to 20,000 tonnes a year. The use of an additional 8000 tonnes of butane by L.P.G. consumers and the production of some Maui L.P.G. will alter the supply.
