Shipping-News Sailing ships may be back by year 2000
Those who' nostalgically look back on the days o£ great sailing ships and hope they might someday return may have their wishes fulfilled — to an extent. The continuing rise m oil prices has convinced manymarine exnerts that sailing ships will return in force to world trade routes by the end of the century. ... ~ So great is interest m sail that an international synwosium is to be held in London in November which the organisers, the Royal Institution of Naval Architects, expect. about 200 prospective owners, builders, and designers from all over the world to attend. Meanwhile, the first merchant ship powered by canvas sails to be launched for many decades took to the water in Japan early this month. The twin-masted Shin Aitoku Maru, a 699-ton tanker built for the Aitoku company of Tokuyama in Yamaguchi prefecture, was launched by the Imamura shipyard at Kure. But, leaving nothing to chance or the vagaries of the winds, the vessel is also equipped with a 1600-horsepower diesel engine. The engine is of a new fuelefficient design which recycles waste gas. The feature is! claimed to result in the con-' sumption of half as much fuel as o-dinar'- diesels in conventional vessels. ARRIVALS Vishva Bindu (7.59 a.m.), 8121, Dunedin (Dalgety). H.M.N.Z.S.
