School bus rates up 45 p.c.
PA Wellington The 45 per cent increase in school transport rates approved recently for private bus firms is a recognition by the Government of the growing costs of vehicle running, parts, and capital replacement, the Minister of Education (Mr Wellington) has told the School Transport Association's annual conference at Waitangi. The increase lifted the mileage rates for bus firms from a limit of $1.25 to $l.BO per passenger, he said. The rates would be reviewed annually as part of a policy to reassess continually the economics and standards of the service. Now that the vexed question of the responsibility for assessing rates of remuneration for bus firms had been resolved in favour of the Ministry of Transport, the next move in the school-bus industry would be to attempt to make further progress on an over-all review of the system under which the rates were assessed.
