Mugabe asks for $350M

The Prime Minister of Zimbabwe (Mr Robert Mugabe) has ended a one-day visit to Washington after appealing for vast quantities of American economic aid to rebuild his newly independent country.
Mr Mugabe told congressmen that Zimbabwe would need $350 million over the next two years for new schools, hospitals, and roads. He has said Zimbabwe will need $4OOO million over the next five years to recover from the war and lift the status of blacks. ; The . congressmen were non-committal about the size of any United States aid programme, Mr Mugabe later told reporters. The State Department said the United States was working on a $74 million aid package.; At the same time, he offered the United States President his political endorsement, saying he hoped Mr Carter would defeat Ronald Reagan in the November election.
