Vernon Small beaten
PA Nelson The reigning New Zealand chess champion, Vernon Small, of Christchurch, lost his first competition game in two years when he was beaten by Auckland’s Robert Smith in the third round of the South Island chess championships at Nelson yesterday. Small is also defending his South Island title, but will need to win the remainder of his matches to have a chance of retaining it. Canterbury’s Bruce Anderson must now be one of the favourites to win his ninth South Island title. Results:—
