Computer's tip turns to gold
NZPA Perth A computer cleaned out a Perth suburban T.A.B. agency on Wednesday. The computer, in the hands of two punters, took $21,000 (NZ524,780) on Vomette, winner of the Hannans Handicap at Kalgoorlie. The men responsible for the win are Messrs Michael Adams and Paul Weston, two neighbours of Mosman Park, a Perth suburb. Vornette was at 35-1 on the tote, and Messrs Adams and Weston had a joint $5OO each-way bet. Mr Adams bought a “home hobby computer” for $lOOO about three years ago. “Only recently has the computer shown really reliable results,” he said. “It
has taken three years of programming, and painstaking trial and error. “Of course, it is not 100 per cent accurate. I have to allow for missed starts and race interference during an event, but the computer has been so reliable recently that I could tell who the winner was, and by what margin it would win. “My computer has picked the card, a few times and seven of the eight winners at a meeting several times.” Mr Adams said that its average was about five winners at each meeting. “I have big bets, but I’m not a professional punter. I bought the computer because I grew tired of unreliable tips and the high risk associated with human judgment.”.-
