A 20-year-old Yugoslav, Boris Strel, and the Canadian, Kathy Kreiner, are the first winners of the Australia and New Zealand Cups for ski-ing. ‘ • Four international races were to count for the cups on both sides of the Tasman, but two of the New Zealand contests — giant slaloms at Mount Hutt and Turoa were unable to be held. In the end, two slaloms and two giant slaloms in Australia counted for points together with the first F.I.S. downhill at Mount Hutt and the Coronet Cup slalom. Points were awarded from first (worth 25) down to fifteenth place (1) and a total of 55 men and 15 women attained them. None of the New Zealand women skiers contested the Australian races. , Miniatures go to each or the first three place-getters over all and the Australian Federal Minister for .Business and Consumer Affairs (Mr Vic Garland) made the presentations at Perisher Valley, Strel was not there
lo receive his, having taken off to Bali with the rest of the Yugoslav team. ’ “This competition is going to attact considerable inter;, est in the future,” said the convener of the New Zealand Ski Association’s racing committee (Mr Richard Johnson) on his return tjj Christchurch yesterday. However, Mr Johnson said he thought that the over-all programme of international races for the twin F.I.S, series was too big. “The overseas teams really just want to come and train . . . and have a small amount of racing on ; a goodwill basis.” i Leading placings in the Amtralia and New Zealand Cup " Men.—B.
