Freedom edges closer
NZPA Newport, Rhode Island Freedom, skippered by Dennis Conner, yesterday edged closer to selection as the United States defender of the 1980 America’s Cup. Freedom defeated Russell Long’s Clipper by two minutes 20 seconds in a
moderate wind of 10-11 knots on Rhode Island Sound. Freedom had previously established a clear advantage over Clipper in the June and July trials. These final trials carry more'weight, and Freedom’s victory yesterday took its score to 7-1 over Clipper this month.
