Solicitor found guilty on theft charges
After deliberating for four hours, a jury in the High Court last evening found Robert Frederick Arthur Powell, aged 38, a former solicitor, guilty on 11 charges of theft of $62,800 by failing to account and misappropriation. Mr Justice Jeffries remanded Powell on bail to September 5 for sentence. Powell had pleaded not guilty- to 14 charges of theft involving trust
account funds totalling $76,800. Three of the charges involving $14,000 were dismissed by his Honour under section 347 of the Crimes Act, on the ground that the evidence on those counts was not satisfactory.' The defence called no evidence. Senior-Sergeant M. L. White was the officer in charge of the case. "■ '
