Identifying disabled

Sir,—l hope most sincerely that the Crippled Children Society will not consider acting on Mr Gordon Oldham’s suggestion (August 27) that elderly or disabled people should have their names marked by an asterisk or wheelchair symbol in the telephone book, so that callers would know to leave the telephone ringing at least 15 times. When we read of so many elderly people being assaulted and robbed, or being victimised- by unscrupulous

“tradesmen” or confidence tricksters, any such indication would be an open invitation to the lawless element in the community. It would be more practical to provide extra jack-points in disabled people’s homes, so that the telephone could be easily reached at any time.—Yours, etc., J. CARR. August 27, 1980.
