Linwood wins rugby tourney
Linwood won the Cruickshank Thompson Trophy by beating Kaiapoi 26-10 in the final of the Kaiapoi Rugby Club’s tens tournament at Kaiapoi on Sunday. The Kaiapoi team’s second ranking won it the Bartrum Butler Trophy for the second successive year. The tournament, held for the first time last year as part of the Kaiapoi Club’s centennial celebrations, is now to be an annual event. Linwood beat Belfast in one semi-final and Kaiapoi beat last year’s champion, Christchurch, in the other. A North Canterbury referee, Mr Jeff Barber, gained the Referees’ Trophy, judged on a popular vote by the team captains and with the points averaged over the
number of games that each referee controlled. As well as the first and second teams getting their team trophies,-each member received a commemorative medallion. Each team had its player of the tournament, the winners receiving a bottle of wine. The Linwood first five-eighth, Lindsay Hills, was judged the player of the final, which gained him a double ticket ■to “Pinehaven,” For the second time In six exchanges, the Kaiapoi under-15 . team won the Seven Hills R.S.L. Trophy by beating a team from the Seven Hills Club, Sydney.. ' Kaiapoi won ' an. under-14 match . between the two clubs, 12-8.
