Thieves strip house
The Hornby C. 1.8. is investigating the theft of more than $lOOO worth of paint, wallpaper, and plumbing, fittings from ah ' unfinished house at Avonhead at the week-end. Thieves forced a window to enter the house, one _of several in a new subdivision in Bellingham Street, off Merrin Street.
The interior was ready for papering and painting, and the plumbing and toilet were awaiting installation. “They cleaned the place out,” said Detective Sergeant R. J. Woolhouse, of the Hornby C. 1.8. Only one of the new houses is occupied, and Sergeant Woolhouse yesterday appealed for anyone who might have seen any strange vehicles in the area at the
week-end, to get in touch with the Hornby police immediately.
The Hornby C. 1.8. is also investigating a daylight burglary of a house at 476 Halswell Junction Road, in which stereo equipment and amplifiers valued at a total of $l5OO were stolen.
A stereo set valued at $lOOO was stolen from a house in Mortlake Street, Islington, between 7 p.m. on Sunday and 7 a.m. yesterday. More than $3OO in cash was stolen from under the noses of sleeping guests at the Main Street Motels, at 182 Colombo Street, on Sunday night. The thief entered a unit through an insecure window, according to the police.
