Milk may counter tablets’ benefits

The habit of giving children fluoride tablets at breakfast with .milk or milk products rules out most benefits of the tablets, according to a research paper published in the “European Journal of Clinical Pharmacology.” In areas such as Christchurch where there is a low fluoride content in the water, sodium fluoride tablets can be given to children : to prevent teeth decay.

If, however, these are taken at the same time as milk or milk products the beneficial effects of the tablets are greatly reduced. A' Christchurch paediatrician, Dr B. W. Taylor, said yesterday that the best time to,give fluoride tablets to children was when they were not having food or drink.

' "Definitely giving tablets to them at breakfast when milk or milk products are taken almost cuts out the ability of the body to absorb the fluoride,” Dr Taylor said. . -
