Pizza Hut to open
Fast-food fans may soon I have another avenue open to them: the Riccarton Borough Council has given planning consent for a pizza .business in the Riccarton shopping mall, near Matipo Street. The: South Island’s, first Pizza Hut restaurant will open in October at the Northlands shopping centre in Papanui. The $250,000 restaurant will have a liquorlicence, seat 94 and '■ is. intended to provide low-cost family dinners. .'s:; , It, will also have a takeaway bar and a dial-a-pizza service. The Riccarton Pizza Hut is: expected to be similar to the one planned tor Northlands. Pizza Restaurants, Ltd, hopes to open four establishments . - in Christchurch. Town planning committee approval for the Pizza Hut is subject to several conditions. Hours of business will be from 11.30 a.m. to 11.30 p.m. Monday to Saturday, and 11.30 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Sunday. Take-away trade will be restricted to 30 per
(cent of the value of the trade.
This restriction has been imposed so that if the new company later decides to handle only take-aways there will be some form of redress. “A tremendous amount of litter could be generated if there was a large percentage of take-aways and this is one way we have of stopping the situation arising,” said the Mayor of Riccarton (Mr, R.. W. J? Harrington). Several objections were ■heard concerning the volume of traffic that would be generated, the -expected litter problem, and the alleged detrimental effect the building would have on property valuations.
The planning council considered that the objections would be met by the implemention that of its conditions.
An application for a beer and wine licence was heard without any objectors.
“We are satisfied that liquor will not be served as a take-away but only at the
table,” said Mr Harrington
White overalls Riccarton Borough rubbish collectors could be the freshest looking in town. Last evening the council decided to investigate the possibility of issuing its rubbishmen with white overalls decorated with a Riccarton Borough crest.
Permission to preach
The Riccarton Road entrance to the. mall could soon take on the appearance of Speakers’ Comer at Hyde Park, London. Permission was given last evening for two men to preach at the entrance to the mall on Thursday between 6 p.m. and 7 p.m. for : a trial period of two months, provided the mall authorities agree there is no obstruction to footpaths, “Maybe at a later meeting we can discuss the possibility of setting up a place like Speakers’ Corner in Riccarton, to allow people to voice their opinions,” said Mr A. B. Harman.
