First start for Cabinet colt

The talented colt, Macdoon, raced by the Prime Minister (Mr Muldoon) and the Minister of Transport (Mr McLachlan), will have his first race start at the Franklin meeting at Alexandra Park on Friday. His trainer, Freeman Holmes, intends to take him north tomorrow and he will remain in the Auckland area for four or five weeks. “There are three or four races to suit him, including one worth $4OOO at the Morrinsville meeting on September 26,” said Holmes, who will drive him on Friday. Macdoon, by Holmes’s former champion, Noodlum, is out of Barbara Del, one of the top juveniles of her year. The. colt has showed above average ability at

trials, and at least twice has paced the last 800 m in Imin 2s with plenty in reserve. “He’s just a ‘natural’ and I think he’s a good bit above average,” said Holmes. “But when he actually gets to the races it will tell the story.” Seven years ago Holmes started Noodlum on his outstanding race career with a campaign in the Auckland province. His first success was in the Morrinsville Juvenile Stakes, a race on the programme for Macdoon. Noodlum won twice in the north before returning home to win the Spring Time Stakes at the New Zealand Cup carnival. Macdoon will be back in Canterbury in time to contest the Spring Time Stakes.
