Hadlee helps Notts to commanding position
NZPA Nottingham The New Zealand fast bowler, Richard Hadlee, took three wickets to help place his English county, Nottinghamshire, in a commanding position on the first day of their match against the touring Australians at Trent Bridge. Hadlee, who has been plagued by injury in recent months, took three for 29 — the wickets of Graham Yqllop, Kim Hughes and Rod Marsh — as Nottinghamshire cleaned up the Australian middle order and tail. The Australians, sent, into bat by the Nottinghamshire
captain, Clive Rice, were bowled out for 207.
In reply, Nottinghamshire was 172 for three at stumps, thanks mainly to a quality innings of 76 not out by the South African Clive Rice. -
During the Australian innings, th? opener, Graeme Wood, virtually made certain of his place in the Centenary test team with an innings of 76. It was Wood’s first halfcentury of the tour and looked sufficient to put him into the test team ahead of John Dyson, who made only one yesterday. Allan Border made 73, and the next, top score was 15 not out by Dennis Lillee.
At one stage the Australians were 146 for two, but the last eight wickets fell for only 61 runs. The best news for the Australian camp was. the improvement in the condition of the captain, Greg Chappell, who suffered, a groin strain in Friday’s one day international against EnyChappell has been undergoing an intensive course of treatment from the team’s land, at Edgbaston, phsiotherapist and has responded so well that there is now little doubt that he will play in the Centenary test against England at Lord’s on Thursday, and m-y even be fit enough to bowL
