Strikes disrupt port movement
Striking watersiders in Australia and striking tugmasters at Wellington have had; an effect on shipping movements in and out of the Port of Lyttelton, especially Insofar as Union Steam Ship Company vessels are concerned. Two Tasman roll-on vessels, the Union Hobart and the Manama, both run by the Union Group, are idle at Sydney until the watersiders there return to work. No meeting of the striking watersiders is scheduled until tomorrow, after a breakdown in talks on Thursday. Both vessels were originally scheduled to arrive back at Lyttelton on Wednesday. The Union Lyttelton, which serves Melbourne, is not affected by the strike and is expected to arrive at Lyttelton as scheduled on September 2. Farrell Lines’ container ship Austral Pioneer, original!}’ scheduled to berth at Lyttelton today, has been delayed and is not now expected until September 3 from Melbourne. The Botany Bay, originally scheduled to sail from Auckland to Wellington and then to Lyttelton, -will now arrive at Lyttelton direct from Auckland so as to avoid the tugmasters’ industrial dispute at Wellington. A spokesman for the Union Group said the effects of the delays would be reflected in shipping schedules for several weeks after the: Australian dispute had been settled.
