Abortion facilities criticised

The increasing number of women obtaining abortions at the Christchurch Women’s Hospital concerns the Sisters Overseas Service because counselling facilities at the hospital are inadequate, according to a spokeswoman for the group, Ms Helen Rankin. The standard of phvsical treatment of women at the hospital was also poor, she said. The S.O.S. believed that this poor standard was leading women to seek the 'group’s services. In the last month the S.O.S. in Christchurch had counselled as many women as in the month immediately before abortion service became available at the Christchurch Women’s Hospital more than two vears ago. ! The medical superintendent of the hospital, Mr H. McCrostie. said that many women who had been offered counselling before an abortion at the hospital had the offer. The hospital employed three counsellors whose services were readily available to anybody.
