Linseed crop chosen

Response to a 32 per cent increase in the price of linseed, announced to growers in Canterbury and North Otago a fortnight ago, has been encouraging, according to the generalmanager of Fletcher Agriculture (Mr K. M. Doyle). The price rose to $225 a tonne for fair average quality linseed grown in the new season. A bonus system for quality could take the. return to $235 a tonne, and a penalty system applies for below average quality. Harvesting starts in February. The equivalent price for the 1979-80 season under the old contracts would have been $l7O a tonne.

Mr Doyle said that response to the new price had been encouraging because linseed traditionally had to compete with other rotational crops such as barley and peas. The linseed price increase had been the highest and this had been sufficient for many farmers to choose to grow it. , “All growers should try to meet our end-of-August deadline in order to secure their contracts.” . Growers signify their intentions to their seed merchants who make returns to the procurement company, the Linseed Growers, Ltd, with which Fletcher’s is associated, he said.
