Drug offender sent to prison
Eighteen months imprison-) m'ent was imposed on Kevin Te Wakaiti Takiwa, aged 30, a freezing worker, when he appeared for sentence in the. High Court yesterday on a charge of supplying a class) A controlled drug, lysergide (LSD) to an undercover constable on March 18. The accused, who was) represented by Mrs D. J. Or-; chard, had pleaded guilty to the offence, on arraignment, after he had been committed to the High Court at a depositions hearing in the District Court. Imposing sentence, Mr Justice Somers said he was
-prepared to accept that-this was the only occasion that , Takiwa had supplied the i drug to anybody. However, :. when called he had arrived with the drug and was will- ■ ing to supply it to a person he had been introduced to only moments before. Mrs Orchard had subi| mitted in mitigation of penalty that Takiwa was a user rather than a dealer in the ! drug and he was doing a favour for a friend, and notj for personal gain. His lack 1 of assets and his life-stylei confirmed that he was not a dealer. ’ ' j
