Police may use hypnosis
The police are investigating the potential of hypnotism to help solve crime, according to Detective Chief Inspector B. F. Scott, director of investigative services. Hypnotism had been used successfully in the United States and with limited success in Australia, he said. Hypnosis would be used only on witnesses and by consent
The New Zealand police had not had a proper opportunity to make use of it.
“We have some people here that are qualified or say they are,” said Mr Scott. “We are at the process of researching it.” The Australian police investigating the killing of a Sydney judge are reported to; be “very happy” with sketches produced by two witnesses under hypnosis. Mr Scott said that under hypnosis witnesses could recall from their subconscious things which they could not recall in a conscious state.
