Barry Stuart’s debut
NZPA ■ Melbourne New Zealand Cup hope Barry Stuart, has his Melbourne debut in the second Malua Handicap (2000 m at Caulfield today. . . He will be ridden by Victoria’s top distance jockey, Harry White, and the horse’s performance is expected ■to be watched with interest.
The six-year-old, In the Purple gelding, part-owned and trained by W. E. (Bill) Reading, Barry Stuart is given a good chance by the bookmakers and comes in on the third line at 6-1 in the early markets. Barry Stuart carries 58kg today but has been allocated only 51.5 kg in the sAust2os,ooo Caulfield Cup (2400 m run on October 18, and 51kg in the sAust3lo,ooo Melbourne Cup (3200 m run on November 4 at Flemington. Another cups chance, Our Epilogue, in Melbourne with owner-trainer G. L. (Graham) Warwick, has his second run of the season in the 1600 m Columnist Welter.
The five-year-old Balios gelding ran fifth in the ; Moondah Plate (1200 m on August 2 when ridden by Bob Skelton, who has the : mount again today. In the markets Our Epi- : logue is picked as second favourite at 5-1. The 1000 m Chatham I Handicap sees the Palm i Beach gelding Torbek an i even money hot favourite and heading for his fourth i successive Victory. Lavaro, which won the : Hawke’s Bay Cup in the autumn and is now in Australia with his former New Zealand trainer K. D. Campbell, is having a crack at the first Malua Handicap (2000 m and is rated a 5-1 second favourite. ,
