Recreational hunting areas
Sir, ?— The //New. Zealand Deerstalkers’ Association, in proposing the establishment of a recreational hunting area in the Lake SumnerLewis Pass area under the Wild Animals Control Act, 1977, was aware of the desirability of an ecological
reserve. in appropriate areas of the Upper Hope Valley. There'is. a. need, however,'to protect such a zone by intensive hunting pressure to reduce the animals .'therein to nil. Your correspondent, B. .A. Calder (August 14) apparently does not understand . the true puiq3ose of a recreational hunting area, as . laid down in Section 27 (3) of - the ' act. They . are intended as a means, of controlling wild animals' on certain designated areas of public land and by no means are designed to pres' , rve animals. Recreational hunting is. the preferred method of control in these-areas, :but : if this . proves inadequate? pro? vision exists in the act - for more ■ extreme.. methods (e;g. helicopters) .to be, used tp redqce numbers to the desired level. —:Yours, etc.,' /' /. . M. J. MORRIS? - President; North' Canty Branch,-N.Z.D.AI .' /?.;/?“/ ■ August 14. 1980.
