Proposed tour by Springboks

Sir, — Your editorial on the Springbok Rugby tour appals me. As a newspaper you will cherish your editorial freedom and the rights of a free press. Yet you use this same freedom to advocate the denial of important freedoms to me and many others. It is my individual right to make my own moral and political judgment as to whether I support this Rugby tour. I was strongly opposed to our Olympic team going to Moscow. However, I defended the freedom of our sportsmen to go, — in your correspondence columns, and in a personal letter to Mr Highet. Unfortunately, we are seeing a trend where certain people and groups are eroding our personal rights and freedoms,, even to the extent of offering threats of violence. I. deplore this and when a so-called responsible paper like “The Press” joins with those seeking to inhibit our liberty the situation is serious indeed. — Yours, etc.,

E. SUTHERLAND. August 13, 1980.
