Speed limits
Sir, — Regarding M. McDonald’s letter (August 9) about speed limits. It seems very obvious to me what are the reasons behind the Ministry of Transport’s efforts to enforce the speed limits. The possible avoidance of loss of life through ensuring safe, reasonably smooth flow of traffic is a “very” reasonable and sensible reason for speed limit control. It is the people who do not see the reasons, nor fear the penalties of speeding who are responsible for many of the accidents involving injuries that occur on our streets. Now that M. McDonald has the reasons he need no longer wonder about the objectives of the M.O.T. regarding speed limits. — Yours, etc., MARTIN de JONG. August 12, 1980.
