Kim could be hanged if convicted of either of. the charges against him, while the others could get sentences of up to life in prison. About 170 people, including 45 family members of the defendants, and officials and observers from the United States, Japanese, and ■British Embassies, attended the first preliminary session. Other family members who refused to attend the opening session issued a statement claiming “the martial law authority had no intention to have an open and fair trial.”
They said that they had been unable to find lawyers for the accused because of Government pressure, and said that 20 lawyers active in previous human-rights cases had been, detained by military authorities
