19 years of the wall
NZPA-Reuter West Berlin West Berlin yesterday marked tlie nineteenth anniversary of the Communistbuiit Berlin Wall by laying wreaths to commemorate the 70 East Germans who died trying to cross it to the West. The anniversary -came only two weeks before the. West German Chancello'r (Mr Helmut Schmidt) visited East Germany for talks with the Head of State (Mr Erich Honecker). Mr Schmidt wants to ease East German travel restrictions. Only East German
pensioners can travel freely to the West. August 13, 1961, when the East Germans started building the wall, as a dark day in Berlin’s history.
East German newspaper editorials, without referring to the wall directly, spoke yesterday of that August 13 as the day East Germany demonstrated the inviolability of its .borders. So far no-one, is recorded as trying to cross it from West to East. - ••• ...,
Before then there was. nothing to hinder traffic between East Berlin, the postwar ' sector Soviet control, and West Berlin, divided into United Stated, British 1 and French sectors.
