Biological surveys of rivers

Detailed biological surveys of the Avon, Heathcote, and Styx rivers have been prepared for the Christchurch Drainage Board by the board’s biologist, Dr J. A. Robb, and temporary workers from the student Community Service Programme. The surveys, described in a 214-page report, will be used in the future to determine what changes may occur in these rivers. They may also be used to dispel the fears of some waterquality critics that Christchurch rivers are dying from pollution and neglect. In a report to the board’s works committee, the board’s chief engineer, Mr P. J. McWilliam, said the report would be a baseline for future studies. It could help to determine the impact on river life of any future cnemical spills.

A separate botanical survey has also been done of the wetlands beside Horseshoe Lake, which is now part of the board’s Dudley Creek flood-relief project.
