Prince host to news media
Prince- Fumihito of Japan was host to the news media for an hour yesterday, being ushered by' his ’ aides from pet lamb to pet calf, and from shearing' /shed to sheep round-up. - The prince, aged 14, is staying at Kinloch, near Little River, the property of Mr Michael Sellar.
A reporter of “The Press” stood beside the prince during the shearing and managed to coax a royal smile, but just as
Prince Fumihito was warming to the conversatin, his chamberlain stepped in, saying that reporters, were not, to speak directly to the prince.; If there' were ’ any questions; the chamberlain would answer them. ... “Thb rule has been made between the Japanese and New Zealand Governments,” said Mr T. Soga. “In Japan, it is strictly limited who speaks to the prince. Only members of the Govern-
ment Press Club are allowed to talk to the royal family." Although Prince Fumihito has travelled with his father, Crown Prince Akihito, this is his first trip abroad with only aides as companions. It is also his first stay on a farm. The prince was relaxed, and life on the farm since he had arrived on Tuesday, was more or less as usual, Mr Sellar said. “He fits in beautifully with the family,” said Mrs
Deborah Sellar. “It’s nice to have the younger children about, as they keep things so. informal.” Edward Sellar, aged 14, and his cousin, Thomas Hutchison, aged 16, are Prince Fumihito’s companions while he is staying at Kinloch. - The prince will visit the Canterbury Museum on Tuesday and also Christ’s College, where he will watch the quadrangular rugby tournament.
