Heathcote refuses

An advertising campaign against the disposal of glass and other dangerous objects in rubbish collection bags does not have the backing, of Heathcote. County’s, works and reserves committee. ■ > It voted..-: narrowly yester.i day against contributing $250 to the campaign, which is being organised by the Christchurch City Council.

The campaign, costing in total $9735, was “another fillip” for advertising agencies said' Cr W. M. Hind? marsh.! The county did not have ‘ a problem with dangerous objects because its rubbish bags were sturdier those those of other “skinflint” councils and were well marked with warnings, he said.

The County Engineer (Mr D. JA May) confirmed that the council had no problem of this type in its collections. No rubbish collector had been injured badly enough to be forced off work as far back as he could recall; Mr May said the campaign would involve television and newspaper advertisements and the metropolitan local bodies had been invited to contribute on the basis of their collection staff numbers.. ’ ■;:

The committee’s opposition could be a case of - “the famous last'words of people who say it can’t happen, to me,” said Cr J. Richardson. If the campaign averted only one bad accident it would he $250 well spent by Heathcote. He was supported by Crs B. K. Roberts and P. E. Prebble. The committee’s chairman (Cr D. J. Patchett)

used his vote to carry Cr Hindmarsh’s motion against contribution to the -campaign.
