Extra S1.7M sought for gas users
The.. Minister of Energy (Mr Birch) was yesterday presented with submissions by Christchurch local bodies and industries calling for almost $1.7 million as additional assistance for domestic gas consumers who have to convert to electricity. The submissions were presented by the Mayor of Christchurch (Mr Hamish Hay). They had been prepared by a working party formed recently by the Christchurch City Council,
the Heathcote County ; Council, the Riccarton Borough Council, the Christchurch Gas Company, the Canterbury Manufacturers’ Assoc&l ation, and the Electrical’ Supply Authorities’ Asso* ciation. t
A marginal increase is,', sought in Government ' assistance to bring the total to an average of $609 a consumer. This was recommended in order to compensate those gas consumers whose cooking appliance
had been verified as being the only means of cooking, in the year preceding the Gas Company’s announcement.
The submissions noted that there were considerable numbers of pensioners cooking by gas who would be caused considerable financial hardship if they were not given compensation, which is at present ruled out because they do not use enough gas each year to qualify for help.
