Opossum hunter safe

PA ' Westport A helicopter has picked up the Christchurch opossum hunter, ■ Brian McCarthy, who had been.trapped by a flooded creek in the Mokihinui Valley near Westport for the last two days. The Karamea-based helicopter was working in the area and had heard of the man’s plight and picked him up yesterday morning. Mr McCarthy has been opossum trapping in the Larrakin Creek area for some time and left the Goat Creek Hut on Tuesday morning to check a line of traps across the creek. However, heavy rain raised the level of the creek and Mr McCarthy did not return to camp on Tuesday evening. His companion at the hut, Mr B. Johnston, made radio contact with Christchurch and then the Westport police were put on stand-by. A message scrawled in the sand on the banks of the swollen creek, indicated that Mr McCarthy had made north for the Sinclair Hut, and no fears were held for his safety. He was found safe and well yesterday morning.
