Queue to buy crabs

A queue stretched along the footpath outside Mr Mike Sultan’s Edgeware fish supply yesterday morning after a report in “The Press” about his efforts to encourage New Zealanders to eat fresh crab meat. In less than half an hour, Mr Sultan had sold the last SOkg of the 400 kg of Spider crabs he had bought from Lyttelton fishermen. “The demand was incredible, and we have had reports from customers who were very impressed with the taste of the meat,” said Mr Sultan.

It is believed to be the first time that the crabs, some of which weigh more than 2.5 kg, have been sold fresh to the public in Christchurch.

They have a flavour very similar to that of crayfish, but are much cheaper. Mr Sultan at present is selling them for $3 a kilogram. He is awaiting the next consignment, and will hold a “crab day” in his shop, next week. “I am certain there is a big market for them,” he said.
