Top cricket umpire for 12-week visit
One of ' England’s ' top umpires, ■ Don Oslear; will spend 12 weeks in New Zealand later this year by courtesy of the Canterbury Cricket Umpires’ Association. Mr Oslear will be based in Christchurch, where he will spend his time umpiring and giving coaching and lecture sessions. Acknowledged as 'one of the top authorities on the laws of the game, Mr Oslear is the chief coaching instructor of the Association of Cricket Umpires in England. He wrote to the New Zealand Cricket Council expressing an interest in coming to New Zealand; The C.C.U.A.
) corresponded' with Mr Oslear 1 and the trip is the result of those discussions. His trip is expected to cost about $4BOO, of which the / New Zealand Cricket Council . will provide $l5OO, if Mr t Oslear travels around the 1 country giving coaching 1 sessions. • It is hoped t< receive a 5 grant from the' Lion Brewt eries Sport to help offset the r costs. Mr Oslear has ’ umpired test and county i cricket in England for the i last seven years, and he stood in one of the tests between - England and the West Indies - during the present series. J Mr Oslear will arrive in .. Christchurch late next month.
