Anderton blend for success

Special Correspondent Dunedin Hector Anderton is about to begin his forty-ninth season as a public trainer with a blend of youth and experience jn his Wingatui stable. The experience is in the form of Llaymai and Gentle Jim. Youth is represented by Powley, Rock Crystal, Tina Kumai and Pot Black. Llaymai. and Powley are engaged at the Oamaru meeting on Monday when Rock Crystal and Tino Kumai will contest a parade for two-year-olds. Llaymai graduated to class one in the autumn when he won middle distance races at Wingatui, Ascot Park and Cromwell. ’The Mellay — Miss Kumai gelding ' was then tripped by wet tricks and was eased in his work. Llaymai’s sequence of wins was a feather in the cap of the seventy-four-year-old Anderton. Llaymai had a blood problem when trained by son Brian, who prepared him for a maiden win at Beaumont in December 1976. On the other hand Bymai, which won the Grand National Hurdles On Saturday from Brian’s* stable, was only a mediocre performer on the flat when trained by Hector as a three-year-old. Llaymai and Bymai are both raced by Mr Stuart Sidey, of Dunedin, Powley, which starts her/. racing career at'Oamaru, is a three-year-old half sister by Noble Bijou to Gentle Jim. The pair are. out of Mellay Vite, which won the Metropolitan Handicap at Riccarton. Gentle Jim, a four-year-old

by Causeur, quit maiden ranks at Wingatui in February and was then put aside. “I felt he needed more time to mature,” said Anderton. Rock Crystal is a gelding by Native Turn out of the outstanding race mare and now successful brood mare, Princess Mellay. Princess Mellay won the New Zealand Cup in 1970 and 1971 and she has produced Korero, Princess Orchid, Tiara, and Prince Majestic, which made a big impression as a two-year-old last, season when he won twice at Trentham in May and was runner up in his other two starts. Tiara, the winner of four races for Anderton towards the end of last season, is still spelling. “I have thought out a pair, of shoes for her that I hope: will prevent her bruising her; heels,” he said. Tina Kumai, the other 1 two-year-old Anderton has entered for the parade at, Oamaru, is a half sister by Native Turn to Llaymai, Princess Kumai and Lady Kumai. Pot Black, which was bought for $lB,OOO by Mr Jim Brunton at the 1979 national yearling sale, is some months off racing. He cut a hind leg to the bone in a paddock accident and the son of First Consul — Pauanui did further damage to the same leg after he had been gelded. '■> / It was back in the 1932-33 season that Anderton set up as a public trainer, his first win coming at Waimate in March, 1933 with Red Racer, which was successful in the WaimateCup.
