Strange love for the bizarre

The German director, Werner Herzog, has a love of bizarre subjects for his films.

At last year’s film festival we saw his version of the early classic vampire film, “Nosferatu;” and now he has turned his attention to an army barber who slits his girlfriend’s throat and is beheaded for her troubles in “Woyzeck,” which begins at the Academy tomorrow. Somehow, Herzog has the knack to transfonn such unappetising subjects into excellent cinema, and the leading actor (Klaus Kinski), whose collaborations with Herzog include playing the part of Nosferatu, delivers a harrowing and unforgettable performance.
