Police ‘not down’ about inquiry

PA Wellington The police are not letting events at the Thomas inquiry get them down, according to the Commissioner of Police (Mr R. J. Walton).

There was no indication that disclosures and findings at the commission were having any marked effect on morale, he said. . “Members of the police appear to be keeping: the matter in perspective, in that the commission relates to one investigation that occurred 10 years ago when about two-thirds of the staff were not in the police,” Mr Walton said.

They appreciated that they had a public service to fulfil and were continuing to do the job with the highest degree of . professionalism possible.':;) The president of the Police Association. (Sergeant A. J. Monk) said he had had no feedback of policemen being harassed by the public. The public appeared to be prepared to await the outcome of the commission, he said. “We have the crime of today to deal with, and members are getting on with that job,” Sergeant Monk said.
