Panda birth a first
NZPA-Reuter Mexico City
Pe-Pe and Ying Ying, two giant pandas who live together at the Chapultepec Zoo in Mexico City, have put their endangered species one less panda away from extinction by producing the first ■ panda naturally conceived and born in captivity outside China.
The 99g, 10cm long, male cub was born on Sunday after a normal delivery, a veterinarian said. Mother and son were resting comfortably in their cell and zoo officials said they would remain isolated from the public for up to three months to keep Ying Ying from getting nervous and possibly harming her cub, Pe-Pe nervously paced around his 800 sq m cage where he had been separated from his mate since Saturday, something he normally did not do.
