Two buskers who want to play for people in Cathedral Square haye started a petition aimed at getting the Christchurch City Council to change its mind on street entertainment.
Buskers “Rael” (left) and “Speedy” are shown entertaining shoppers at the Pier Mall, New Brighton, yesterday. Since August 8 the two, who prefer not to use their real names (because they say they are boring) have collected 600 to 700 signatures. w
“Rael” denies that busking is a form of begging. “We are providing a public service,” he said. Buskers gave free entertainment for those who could not afford to pay $lO for a concert. He said that the two never solicited money. The guitar case was open and people could contribute if they wanted to. “Rael” said they would stay in Christchurch until they were given permission to play in the Square. They had been asked by the police in the Square if they had a licence to perform when
they had had no intention of playing. “The police ask you if you have a licence but the City Council won’t issue one and you cannot play without one. You are in a no-win situation,” said “Rael.” The City Council was denying buskers the right to earn a living the way, they wanted to. The two might well be forced to go on the dole. The two were moved on by the police in New Brighton on Saturday but since then they have been, given permission to play at the Pier Mall.
