Steve ■ Johnston was last evening chosen as the; Canterbury “Surf life-saver’ of the year” and therefore the recipient of the Jim Sutherland Memorial Trophy. A popular winner, Johnston had already been recognised as the “patroller of the year” and he presented. an
outstanding report from his overseas study tour. Johnston might have failed to win a Canterbury title, but he had an otherwise very successful competitive season and, on the administrative side, returned to the club captaincy of Waimairi.
