Double-manning of ambulances

PA Wellington The Government has approved a limited proposal for the double-manning of emergency ambulances. The Minister of Health, (Mr Gair), has said that the scheme, which was designed to allow frontline emergency ambulances to be manned by two trained officers, would be progressively implemented over the next 16 months. The scheme falls short of that sought by ambulance of-

ficers. Wellington’s chief ambulance officer, (Mr Surtees) said 33 men were required to double-man the city’s free ambulance service. Under the scheme, Wellington would get about 12 extra men.

The Ambulance Officers’ Institute president, (Mr Salmon), said he was pleased with the move and hoped it foreshadowed more staff approvals for double-mann-ing. He said it was recognised that money for health care was limited.-
