Oil spillage in Avon
Quenching-oil overnight escaped into the stormwater system from the factory of P. and D. Duncan, Ltd. in St Asaph Street and flowed into the Avon River, near Madras Street, early yesterday.-,;,.. : ■ - The deputy chief engineer of the Christchurch Drain- ; age Board (Mr H. P. Hunt) ! said the amount of oil that flowed into the river was
"moderate” but he was reluctant to give an exact figure. "We quickly found the source of the. escape this morning and were able to stop any more flowing into the river,” Mr Hunt said. ’We could not do much about what had escaped into the river. It was very thin and I could nbt imagine its causing any problems to fish and bird life on the river.”
